How does autolugu.ee work?

  1.  Search: look for a car by VIN code and see if anyone has already shared their experiences about this vehicle

  2. Read and evaluate: read other users' experiences and opinions.
Keep in mind, these are people's observations, not official assessments.

  3.  Share: if you have seen or owned a car, you can add your experience as a registered user and if needed attach files (e.g. pre-purchase inspection report, repair invoice).

Why do we use VIN code?

Where can I find the VIN code?

Why Autolugu.ee was born – my story.

Autolugu.ee was born from an unpleasant experience.
As they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

I once found a suitable and well-priced car on a well-known car sales portal. The only downside was that the car was in Tartu, while I lived in Tallinn. Before going to see it, I did all the usual checks that any potential buyer does: there were no accidents recorded on the traffic insurance fund website, inspections had been properly completed, and the seller confirmed by phone that the car was in ideal condition.

Everything seemed perfectly legitimate, so there was nothing left to do but buy train tickets on a beautiful Saturday and travel to Tartu, hoping to return with a proud new car. The day started well – the seller met me at the train station, the car looked great, and even the test drive gave no reason for suspicion.

Although everything seemed perfect, I decided to visit a repair shop just in case, so professionals could inspect the car. Since I don't know much about cars myself, this seemed like a sensible step, and in hindsight, it was the best decision that day.

At the repair shop, it became clear within just a few minutes that the car had been through a serious accident, was poorly reassembled, and had several other minor and major technical problems. In summary, the car would have immediately required very large additional investments, at least as much as the car's own price.

The purchase fell through.
Unfortunately, by that point, an entire free day had been wasted, along with money for train tickets and the pre-purchase inspection, and a lot of energy. The financial loss may not have been enormous, but with that time and money, I could have done something much more enjoyable.

Some time later, the car disappeared from sale. I still feel sorry for the person who eventually bought it. At that time, Autolugu.ee didn't exist yet – a place where I could have warned other potential buyers and saved them from a bad experience.

Unfortunately, that experience wasn't the last. After that, I viewed several more cars, fortunately closer to home, but overall, they also consumed considerable time, money, and nerves. I've heard quite a few similar stories from my friends as well. Sometimes it seems that a large portion of cars on the market are simply "patched up" for sale, hoping to quickly find a victim and profit from the unfortunate.

This is exactly why Autolugu.ee was born.
To save people's time, money, and nerves.

My dream is that in the future, car owners themselves will add their cars here, along with honest information and, for example, a pre-purchase inspection report. This way, it will be easier for interested buyers to find a suitable and honest vehicle, and fraud will become increasingly difficult.

And if someone doesn't want to share anything about their car's technical condition, then every potential buyer has a perfectly justified question: why not? miks?
